Hexagon mosaic tiles

Two white hexagon tiles, delivered Australia-wide, both mosaic sheets sold by the sheet: Carrara Large Hexagon, natural marble with a polished face, and Carrara Hexagon, ceramic with a matt face. Each has an A$3 sample piece. Polished chips each catch a highlight and matt ones do not, which is one more reason to compare the two samples in your own light.

White hexagon tiles: marble or ceramic

Carrara Large Hexagon records Marble, polished, as 70 mm hexagons on a 250 × 290 mm sheet, 8 mm thick. Carrara Hexagon records Ceramic, matt, on a 282 × 325 mm sheet, 6 mm thick; its page states the sheet size but not the size of each hexagon. Both carry the Carrara name, but only the Large Hexagon is marble: on Carrara Hexagon the name is a look, and its description calls it Carrara-inspired. Nine tiles here say Carrara. Five of them are marble. works through every Carrara name in the range.

Why a hexagon, and not a square

A hexagon has no straight joint line that runs the length of the wall. A square grid hands the eye two continuous lines to follow; a hexagon field breaks its joints into a zigzag at every chip. The work moves to the perimeter: wherever the field meets a straight edge, the hexagons along it are cut across their angles.

Hexagon tiles for a kitchen splashback

Both sheets are listed in kitchen splashback tiles, which is how the range is grouped, not a rating. A 3 m splashback at 600 mm high is 1.8 m², or 1.98 m² once an assumed 10% allowance is added: 22 sheets of Carrara Hexagon or 28 of Carrara Large Hexagon. Whether a sheet suits a particular splashback is for your installer to confirm.

Hexagon floor tiles: what the pages record

Neither sheet records an AS 4586 slip class, so there is no floor figure on either page to read, and no installed post here shows either sheet. What a particular floor needs is for your installer or specifier to confirm.

Is Carrara Large Hexagon a large hexagon tile?

No. It is a mosaic sheet: its page records 70 mm hexagons on a 250 × 290 mm sheet. There is no single large hexagon tile in the range. The large-format tiles here, at 600 × 600 and 600 × 1200 mm, are listed in large format tiles.

How many hexagon sheets per square metre?
