Mosaic tiles

A mosaic is laid as a sheet, and the sheet is the part worth understanding.

The chips arrive mounted on a backing at a spacing set in the factory, and it cannot be opened or closed on the wall. It loads the job onto one decision: the joint where two sheets meet has to match the joints inside them. Get that wrong and the sheet edges draw a faint square across the surface that grout will not cover.

Gloss, matt and soft polished are the finishes on file here, with some sheets recording none, and no sheet carrying an AS 4586 wet pendulum class. Shape pages sit inside this one: hexagon, penny round, fish scale and square.

Chips run down to 12.8 × 95 mm fingers and 20 mm rounds, and the smaller the chip the more closely a sheet follows whatever is underneath it. A mosaic conforms to a bowed wall; it does not bridge one, which is the difference between a sheet and a large tile on the same surface.
