Short answer: A mosaic is a format, not a material: small pieces set on a sheet, sold and laid a sheet at a time. The twelve mosaics here are five marble, four ceramic and three porcelain, going by the Material row on each product page. Eleven state a sheet size, from 225 × 230 mm to 306 × 306 mm by area, and ten state a piece size, from 20 mm rounds to 36 × 150 mm bars. Eleven state a thickness — 6 mm on four, 7 mm on two and 8 mm on five — and none states a slip rating.

Four small-format tile sheets overlapping on a pale stone bench: white marble hexagons, white marble rounds, glossy graphite-grey strips and matt white herringbone.

Two questions come up about any mosaic: what size it is, and what it is made of. Both have an answer on each product page, in two different rows. This page puts the twelve side by side so the two answers can be read together, with facts read from the product pages on 29 September 2026.

1. A mosaic is a format, not a material

On every one of the twelve product pages the product type is Mosaic tile. That word describes how the tile arrives: many small pieces held together on a sheet, so the pieces are laid a sheet at a time rather than one by one. It says nothing about what the pieces are made of. The material has its own row, and across these twelve it gives three different answers.

The Material row records the value in the supplier's current documentation; Tilekind did not determine these compositions by testing them. The five tiles here that are actually stone sets out where those values come from.

2. The twelve in one table

Mosaic Material Style / shape Sheet size Piece size Finish
Carrara Fan Marble Fan mosaic 225 × 230 mm 75 mm Honed
Carrara Large Hexagon Marble Hexagon 250 × 290 mm 70 mm hexagon Polished
Carrara Petite Herringbone Marble Herringbone 270 × 262 mm 30 × 60 mm Polished
Carrara Round Marble Round mosaic 285 × 305 mm 20 mm Honed
Carrara Stack Marble Stack 305 × 305 mm 36 × 150 mm Polished
Carrara Herringbone Ceramic Herringbone 316 × 277 mm 21.5 × 71.5 mm Matt
Carrara Hexagon Ceramic Hexagon 282 × 325 mm Not specified Matt
Carrara Square Ceramic Square mosaic 306 × 306 mm Not specified Matt
Studio White Herringbone Ceramic Herringbone 316 × 277 mm 21.5 × 71.5 mm Gloss
Carrara White Strip Porcelain Strip mosaic 296 × 299 mm 20 × 145 mm Gloss
Studio Graphite Strip Porcelain Strip mosaic 296 × 299 mm 20 × 145 mm Gloss
Studio White Finger Porcelain Finger mosaic Not specified 12.8 × 95 mm Gloss

A Not specified cell means the product page does not state that value, not that the value is zero.

3. Five marble, four ceramic, three porcelain

The five marble mosaics are Carrara Fan, Carrara Large Hexagon, Carrara Petite Herringbone, Carrara Round and Carrara Stack. All five record a finish: Carrara Fan and Carrara Round are honed, and Carrara Large Hexagon, Carrara Petite Herringbone and Carrara Stack are polished.

Nine of the twelve carry the Carrara name, and only five of those nine record marble. Carrara Herringbone, Carrara Hexagon and Carrara Square record ceramic, and Carrara White Strip records porcelain; their descriptions call three of them Carrara-inspired. The name is a look, not a material, and Is it Carrara marble? works through all nine.

The four ceramic mosaics are three matt Carrara patterns and one gloss, Studio White Herringbone. The three porcelain mosaics are all gloss: Carrara White Strip, Studio Graphite Strip and Studio White Finger. What porcelain and ceramic mean as words is covered in Porcelain, ceramic, rectified, matt, gloss; this page stays with which row says what.

4. Sheet size and piece size

A mosaic has two sizes, and the product pages keep them in two rows. The sheet size is the thing you handle, count and, here, buy. The piece size is the unit that repeats across the surface. Nine of the twelve state both. Carrara Square and Carrara Hexagon state a sheet size only. Studio White Finger states a piece size only, 12.8 × 95 mm. Why a size row can mean a face, a sheet or a piece is set out in How tile size is stated.

The eleven sheet sizes fall on nine specifications: 316 × 277 mm and 296 × 299 mm each appear twice. Three pieces are given in one dimension only — a 20 mm round, a 75 mm fan and a 70 mm hexagon — and the pages do not say what that one figure measures, so this page takes no area from them.

Ask for a standard mosaic size and the Australian size guides give ranges rather than one number. Of nine guides read on 29 September 2026, one lists mosaic sizes of 12 × 92, 19 × 19, 23 × 23 and 48 × 48 mm, another gives 25 × 25 and 50 × 50 mm, and a third puts small tiles and mosaics at typically 25 × 25 mm to 100 × 100 mm. All of them describe the size of the individual pieces, not of the sheet they come on. The pieces here run from 20 mm rounds and 12.8 mm-wide fingers to 36 × 150 mm bars, and every one of them comes on a sheet. What each sheet size does to a square metre is worked out in Tile sizes in Australia, and how to count sheets for a project in How to measure a tiling project.

5. What all twelve leave blank

Two things are missing from every one of the twelve pages:

  • a slip rating;
  • how many pieces make up a sheet.

So a mosaic here cannot be compared on slip rating from its product page. Thickness is different: eleven of the twelve state one — 6 mm on Carrara Herringbone, Carrara Hexagon, Carrara Square and Studio White Herringbone, 7 mm on the two strip mosaics and 8 mm on the five marble mosaics — and Studio White Finger states none. Since 4 October 2026 the twelve are sold by the sheet, not the box. On the eleven that state a sheet size, the price is per sheet and the per-square-metre figure beside it is worked from that sheet size; Studio White Finger states none, so its price is per sheet with no sheet size to work a per-square-metre figure from. Where any of these matters to a project, ask for it before ordering and confirm it with the responsible installer or specifier.

6. By pattern

Most of the twelve have a guide of their own pattern: herringbone for the three herringbone sheets, hexagon for the two hexagons and the fan, penny round for Carrara Round and kit kat for the finger mosaic and the two strip mosaics. The two hexagon sheets also have a kitchen guide, Kitchen hexagon tiles, which works out how many sheets a splashback takes and where a hexagon field stops. Carrara Stack and Carrara Square have no pattern guide of their own; Carrara Square, the one square mosaic, is listed in square mosaic tiles, and Carrara Fan, the one fan-shaped sheet, in fish scale mosaic tiles. The three herringbone sheets are also gathered in Herringbone mosaic tiles. All twelve are listed in Mosaic tiles.

Questions people ask

Is mosaic tile ceramic or porcelain?

It can be either, or neither. Of the twelve here, four record ceramic, three record porcelain and five record marble.

What is the difference between a tile and a mosaic?

A mosaic is a tile made of small pieces held together on a sheet, so it is laid a sheet at a time. A field tile is one piece. That is why a mosaic page can state two sizes, one for the sheet and one for the piece.

What is a standard mosaic tile size?

There is no single one. Among nine Australian size guides read on 29 September 2026, one lists mosaic sizes of 12 × 92, 19 × 19, 23 × 23 and 48 × 48 mm, another gives 25 × 25 and 50 × 50 mm, and a third puts small tiles and mosaics at typically 25 × 25 mm to 100 × 100 mm. All of those are piece sizes, not sheet sizes. The pieces here run from 20 mm rounds to 36 × 150 mm bars, on sheets from 225 × 230 mm to 306 × 306 mm by area.

Are the marble mosaics here real marble?

Five record Marble in their Material row: Carrara Fan, Carrara Large Hexagon, Carrara Petite Herringbone, Carrara Round and Carrara Stack. The other four Carrara-named mosaics record ceramic or porcelain. Where the marble value comes from is set out in The five tiles here that are actually stone.

Where these facts come from

Every material, pattern, size and finish above was read from the twelve product pages on 29 September 2026. The thickness figures were updated on 1 October 2026 from supplier documentation, and the passage on selling by the sheet and the five marble finishes on 4 October 2026. The mosaic sizes quoted from Australian size guides come from nine guides that Google showed in its top twenty for tile sizes australia and standard tile sizes on the same day; they are quoted, not named. No figure here was measured or tested by Tilekind.
