Wall tiles

Twelve ceramic wall tiles, delivered Australia-wide: eleven subway tiles in 75 × 300 mm and 100 × 300 mm and one rectified 300 × 600 mm gloss white. Every tile has an A$3 sample piece, so you can check the face and colour against your wall before ordering boxes.

A wall is the one surface nobody stands on

That changes what you are deciding. On a floor you are choosing grip; on a wall you are choosing what sits behind the tile and where the first course lands. Render, plasterboard and fibre-cement sheet each take an adhesive differently, and a wall out of plumb turns up in the grout lines. A splashback is set out as a run rather than an area, and the end cuts decide whether the courses read centred.

The twelve wall tiles

All twelve record ceramic. Eleven are 8 mm thick and one is 10 mm. The face sizes are 75 × 300 mm on nine, 100 × 300 mm on two and 300 × 600 mm on one. Five subway tiles carry a wave face and the other seven are flat. Ten are gloss, Studio Linen is matt, and Studio Flat comes in gloss or matt. Colours are white, grey, charcoal, black and green, and the subway tiles page shows much the same grid.

Face size sets how busy a tiled wall looks. A 75 × 300 mm tile leaves about 16.7 m of grout joint per square metre of wall, a 100 × 300 mm tile about 13.3 m, and the 300 × 600 mm tile about 5 m. Subway tile layouts: 8 patterns shows the same tile laid eight ways.

Common questions

How many wall tiles do I need?

A 75 × 300 mm tile works out at about 44.4 tiles per square metre and a 100 × 300 mm tile about 33.3, before cuts. The tile calculator turns your wall measurements into a count of whole tiles.

Can I see a wall tile before ordering?

Yes. Each tile has a sample piece, and you can build a sample shortlist of several in one order.
