Short answer: tiling height is a quantity decision before it is a taste one. In a 2.4 × 2.4 m room with one door, a 1,200 mm half wall gives 10.54 m² of wall tile; floor to ceiling at 2,400 mm gives 21.37 m². That is 49.3 per cent of the job against 100 per cent, roughly twice the tile count, and a top edge that runs 8.78 m in one case and does not exist in the other. The heights below are common choices, not rules; the tiler or builder sets the one that goes on your wall.
1. The three heights people stop at
- A half wall, around 1,200 mm. Sometimes called a dado. It covers the vanity or trough and the splash around them, and leaves the wall above painted.
- Door head height, around 2,100 mm. The tiling stops level with the door frame, so the top edge lines up with something already there.
- Floor to ceiling, 2,400 mm or 2,700 mm. No top edge at all; the tiling meets the ceiling.
None of these is a rule; they are the heights that recur, and the tiler or builder sets out the real one against the real ceiling and door. 2. The worked room
Every figure below comes from one example; substitute your own.
- A square room 2.4 × 2.4 m: four walls, 9.6 m of wall length.
- One door opening, 0.82 × 2.04 m, taken off. Below 2,040 mm only the part under the tiling height comes off.
- A 2 mm joint wherever a joint is shown.
One 2.4 m wall, tiled to the height under test, is 2.88 m² at 1,200 mm, 5.04 m² at 2,100 mm, 5.76 m² at 2,400 mm and 6.48 m² at 2,700 mm. The tile and sheet columns come from the face size alone. A 300 × 600 mm tile is 0.18 m², a 600 × 600 mm tile 0.36 m², a 600 × 1200 mm tile 0.72 m², one 282 × 325 mm mosaic sheet 0.09165 m² — the sizes stated on Studio Pure White Wall Tile, Pietra Bianco, Atlas Pearl, Pietra Alba and Carrara Hexagon Mosaic Tile. 4. Where the courses land
Area tells you how much to buy. Courses tell you where the tiling stops looking deliberate. Count whole courses with a joint between them and none at floor or top edge, then see what is left.

The same arithmetic runs sideways, and that is what decides the internal corners. A 2.4 m wall takes three whole 600 mm columns reaching 1,804 mm, leaving one 594 mm cut in a corner — or, set out from the centre, two cuts of 296 mm. At 300 mm it is seven columns to 2,112 mm and a 286 mm cut, or two of 142 mm; at a 282 mm mosaic sheet, eight sheets to 2,270 mm and a 128 mm cut, or two of 63 mm. One wide cut is quicker; two matched cuts read better from the doorway. That is a set-out decision, made before the first course goes on.
Laying a 300 × 600 mm tile flat or standing it upright does not change the tile count — the face is 0.18 m² either way — but it moves the course module from 300 mm to 600 mm, and that column decides where the last joint falls.
5. Why four courses at 1,200 mm is not exactly four courses
With no joint, 1,200 mm is a clean number: four 300 mm courses, two 600 mm courses, or one 600 × 1200 mm tile upright. That is why a half wall is so often drawn at 1,200 mm. Add a 2 mm joint and the clean numbers move. Four 300 mm courses stand 1,206 mm, six millimetres over; two 600 mm courses 1,202 mm. At 2,400 mm there are more joints and the drift is larger: eight 300 mm courses reach 2,414 mm, four 600 mm courses 2,406 mm. At 2,700 mm, nine 300 mm courses reach 2,716 mm.
Either the height moves by those millimetres, or it is held and the last piece is cut: 294 mm off a 300 mm course at a 1,200 mm half wall, 594 mm off a 600 mm course at 2,400 mm. A tiler will usually take the drift into a free top edge and cut only where the tiling is trapped between floor and ceiling. Two millimetres shows the mechanism; the joint width is the installer's call, and a wider joint moves these figures further.
6. What the leftover cut looks like
- A half wall puts the cut at eye level. A 294 mm piece under a 1,200 mm edge reads as a full course and nobody will pick the six millimetres. A 219 mm strip of hexagon sheet does not — it is a row of part hexagons.
- Door head height puts the cut on an existing line. At 2,100 mm the top edge sits beside the door frame, and the eye compares the two rather than hunting the joint.
- Floor to ceiling hides the cut and pays for it elsewhere. The last piece disappears into the ceiling junction, but there is a cut on every wall, and a ceiling is rarely level across 2.4 m, so the top course is often tapered.
- A large format makes one big cut instead of several small ones. A 600 × 1200 mm tile upright to 2,400 mm gives one whole tile and a 1,198 mm piece.
The mosaic sheet lands whole on none of these heights: at 325 mm it leaves 219 mm at 1,200 mm, 138 mm at 2,100 mm, 111 mm at 2,400 mm and 84 mm at 2,700 mm. That is an argument for setting the height from the sheet, and the tiler's call either way.
7. Where the trim runs, and where it does not
A stopping height creates a top edge, and that edge needs a finish — a trim, a rounded tile edge, or a rectified cut left square. It is a length, and it belongs on the list beside the tiles. External corners add vertical trim at any height.
- 1,200 mm half wall: 8.78 m. The perimeter is 9.6 m and the edge crosses the door opening, so the 0.82 m door width comes out.
- 2,100 mm door head: 9.60 m, unbroken, because the edge passes above the 2.04 m door head.
- Floor to ceiling: none. The junction is a sealant or cornice detail rather than a tile edge.

Questions people ask
Does a half wall make the room look bigger?
That is taste and light, not a number, and anyone who gives you a figure for it is guessing. What is a number: a 1,200 mm half wall here is 49.3 per cent of the full-height area, 59 tiles at 300 × 600 mm against 119, and 8.78 m of top edge a floor to ceiling job does not have. It also leaves a painted surface above the tiling, changing with the paint long after the tile is chosen.
Do I tile behind the vanity?
A 0.9 m wide vanity back panel to 1,200 mm is 1.08 m², about 10.3 per cent of the half-wall area here, so leaving it out is a small saving. The argument against is the next vanity: a replacement of a different width exposes bare wall. Every product page here says shade and surface variation may occur between production batches, so tile it now or keep spares from the same lot.
What about the shower?
A shower enclosure is normally tiled to full height even when the rest of the room stops lower, so a room with a half wall often carries two tiling heights, meeting at the screen line or an internal corner. Plan that junction early: it is where a trim or a change of format has to land. Does the tiling height change the floor quantity?
No. The floor here is 5.76 m² at every wall height in the table; wall and floor are separate decisions.
